From Head CT Scans to Custom‑Fit Helmets

A healthcare team had CT scans of patients' heads and wanted to use them to make custom-fit products such as helmets. We trained the team in Geomagic Wrap to turn each patient's CT data into a clean 3D model, ready for design work.

The Challenge

CT Data Not Yet Ready to Design With

CT scans hold the exact shape of a patient's head, which is what a custom-fit helmet needs. But the 3D surface that comes out of CT data is rarely usable as it is: it can be tangled, have surfaces running through each other and carry detail the design does not need.

The team needed to know how to process that data themselves, so each patient's model would be clean and ready for design.

What We Did

From CT Scan to a Model Ready for Design

  1. Bringing In the CT Data

Turning CT scan data into a 3D surface model in Geomagic Wrap.

  2. Cleaning the Model

Untangling the surface and removing what the design does not need.

  3. Ready for Design

Exporting a clean model their design tools can use to shape a custom-fit product.

  4. Making It Repeatable

Steps the team can follow for every new patient, not just the first one.

The Result

A Repeatable Process for Every Patient

The team learned to take a head CT scan to a clean, design-ready model on its own, for every patient.
