From Curved Chair Forms to Usable CAD

A chair manufacturer had a handheld scanner and complex, curved shapes to capture, but no path from the scan to anything their designers could use. We taught them how to scan well and how to take the data downstream into CAD with Geomagic software.

The Challenge

Shapes You Cannot Measure with Calipers

Chairs are full of ergonomic curves and contoured surfaces that cannot be dimensioned with calipers or a tape. A 3D scanner can capture them, and the team had one.

The problem was everything after the scan. Without a way to turn raw scan data into CAD, every new chair model ran into the same dead end.

What We Did

From Scanning Well to Using the Data

  1. Scanning Well

Scanning chair forms so the data is clean from the start.

  2. Preparing the Scan Data

Processing and aligning the raw scans into a mesh ready to work with.

  3. Taking It Downstream to CAD

Extracting clean geometry their designers could use in CAD, on their own chair forms.

  4. Making It Repeatable

A workflow the team could run again for every new chair model, without outside help.

The Result

A Workflow for Every New Chair Model

The team learned to go from a physical chair to usable CAD, and to repeat it for each new model.
